EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- University of Southern Indiana senior right-hander
Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) was named the GLVC Pitcher of Week after leading the Screaming Eagles to a pair of wins last week in the Dunn Hospitality Tournament. Choate has been named the GLVC Pitcher of the Year twice in his career, the first coming in 2009.
In USI's 5-2 win over Wayne State last Tuesday, Choate allowed just five hits and two runs in seven innings of work to earn his second win of the year. He also struck out six and did not record a walk in the outing.
Choate finished his week by throwing a four-hit, complete-game, 4-0 shutout of St. Cloud State University. The complete-game shutout was his first since undergoing elbow surgery last March.
He scattered four hits over nine innings and 31 SCSU hitters. The Huskies, who entered Sunday's game with a 10-1 record, also were limited to only two runners past second base against Choate.
Overall in his two wins, Choate posted a 1.12 earned run average, allowed nine hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter in 16 innings of work. He is 3-0 on the mound this season with a 2.16 ERA in five appearances.
USI, which is 8-5 overall and has won five straight games, opens the 2011 GLVC schedule on the road this weekend when the Eagles travel to Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday and Drury University Sunday for noon doubleheaders.
