EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team is gearing up for round two against the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division, beginning with a visit to the University of Indianapolis Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
Thursday's game will be aired live on the News 25 Sports Channel (Insight Digital Channel 524; WOW Digital Channel 111; Time Warner Digital Channel 184) and on WPSR 90.7 FM. Live stats, audio, and video also can be accessed at gousieagles.com.
USI (14-8, 10-4 GLVC) enters Thursday's game at Indianapolis with a two-game lead for first place in the East Division and is looking for retribution after suffering a 101-100 triple-overtime loss to the Greyhounds nearly three weeks ago.
The Screaming Eagles overcame an eight-point deficit in the second half to take a two-point advantage into the closing moments of regulation, but the Greyhounds got a bucket in the final 10 seconds to force the first overtime.
Senior guard
Amie Newhart, who scored 22 of her game and career-high 39 points in the overtime periods, hit a three-pointer in the final 10 seconds of the first extra frame to force a second-overtime.
Indianapolis (13-9, 8-6 GLVC), however, overcame a late three-point deficit in the second overtime before using a 7-0 run late in the third overtime to tilt the scales in its favor.
Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, both USI and Indianapolis are on a roll. The Eagles have not lost since their setback to the Greyhounds, winning their last four games. Indianapolis posted a big road win at Drury University last weekend and enter Thursday's contest on a two-game winning streak.
Newhart figures to be a factor in Thursday's rematch after averaging 34.5 points per game in the last two meetings with Indianapolis. Newhart, however, was held out of the scoring column in USI's 72-56 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday, marking the first time in her collegiate career that she has gone scoreless in a game.
Senior guard
Ellen Young leads the Eagles and is seventh in the GLVC with 15.2 points per contest after dropping in a game-high 22 points against Missouri-St. Louis. Senior forward/center
Courtney Perry leads USI and is 10th in the GLVC with 6.8 rebounds per appearance.
Indianapolis, which leads the all-time series with USI, 32-25, got a team-high 32 points from senior forward/center Katie Lyons in its victory over the Eagles last month. Lyons is the team's leading scorer with 10.8 points per game, though freshman guard Katy McIntosh is averaging a team-best 14.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game since Indianapolis dismissed GLVC Player of the Year Samantha Meissel from the team last month.
Following its game with Indianapolis, USI travels to Owensboro, Kentucky, to take on Kentucky Wesleyan Monday. The Eagles close the regular season by visiting Bellarmine University February 17 and hosting Northern Kentucky University February 19.
