USI baseball opens home schedule Friday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 24th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team opens the 2011 home schedule Friday at 3 p.m. when it starts a three-game series with the University of Montevallo. The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday at noon.

The Screaming Eagles (2-3) split a trip to Arkansas, defeating Ft. Hays State University, 7-4, and falling to Arkansas Tech University in a wild game, 10-9. Junior infielder Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) had the big hit of the weekend, a grand slam in the eight-run sixth against ATU.

For the season, junior infielder Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) has the top batting average at .353 through the first five games. Vance has a team-best seven RBIs after his slam on Sunday.

The Falcons of Montevallo (5-5), who host the University of North Alabama Tuesday before traveling to Evansville, have lost three of four since posting a four-game winning. Montevallo leads the all-time series with USI, 2-0.
