EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team saw an 11-point halftime lead evaporate as Northern Kentucky University handed the Screaming Eagles a 73-63 setback to end the regular season Saturday at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (16-10, 12-6 GLVC) shot 65.2 percent and led by as many as 16 in the opening period, but the visiting Norse ended the half on a 4-0 run to close the gap to 36-25 at the break. The Eagles, who scored their 36th point with 1:26 remaining in the first half, were held scoreless for first five-and-a-half minutes of the final period as the Norse clawed their way back into the contest.
Northern Kentucky (17-9, 11-7 GLVC), which picked up the season-sweep of the Eagles, scored 12 straight points to begin the second half and take its first lead of the game.
USI, which made eight of its first nine shots of the game, had scoring opportunities in the second half; but nine missed layups and five additional missed shots in the paint hampered the Eagles, who shot just 25.9 percent from the floor in the final period.
After the two teams battled back-and-forth for the next nine minutes, the Eagles found themselves on the opposite end of a 5-0 run that put the Norse in front, 57-52, with five minutes to play. The Eagles got back to within three points moments later, but a 9-0 Northern Kentucky spurt put the Eagles into a 66-55 deficit they could not recover from.
USI, which honored eight seniors following the contest, was led by senior guard
Amie Newhart and junior guard/forward
Kristin Raker, who both finished with 14 points. Senior guard
Ellen Young added 13 points for the Eagles, who had won four-of-five road games leading up to the regular-season finale.
Junior guard Casse Mogan paced the Norse with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half, while sophomore guard Jaimie Hamlet and junior forward Sadie Bowling added 17 and 16 points, respectively. Northern Kentucky shot 65.0 percent from the floor in the second period and held a 34-24 advantage on the glass for the game.
The Eagles, who clinched the GLVC East Division title Thursday evening, host the University of Indianapolis next Saturday in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. Game time is set for 5:15 p.m. at the PAC.
