Eagles eyeing GLVC East Division title

Game Notes (pdf.)

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team enters the final week of the 2010-11 regular season with its eyes focused squarely on winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title and improving its chances of advancing to the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament for the second straight season.

Coming off a 60-58 road win at the University of Indianapolis this past Thursday, the Screaming Eagles are just one win away from securing the East Division championship. They have their first of three opportunities Monday at 5 p.m. when they visit Kentucky Wesleyan College at the Sportscenter in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Monday's game will be aired live on the News 25 Sports Channel and on WPSR 90.7 FM. Live stats and audio can be accessed at gousieagles.com.

The Eagles (15-8, 11-4 GLVC), who are tied for fourth overall in the GLVC, also are ranked eighth in the latest NCAA II Midwest Region rankings and will face a Kentucky Wesleyan squad that is ranked 10th in the regional rankings.

Monday's meeting with the Panthers (15-8, 9-7 GLVC) will be the second time this season that USI and Kentucky Wesleyan have played each other. Senior guard Amie Newhart scored a game-high 27 points, 19 of which came in the second half, to lead the Eagles to an 85-68 win at the Physical Activities Center on January 17.

Senior guard Ellen Young leads the Eagles with 15.0 points per game, while Newhart is second on the team with 14.1 points per outing. Senior forward/center Courtney Perry is averaging a team-high 6.7 rebounds per contest.

Kentucky Wesleyan is one of the hottest teams in the GLVC, having won four straight games including wins at Northern Kentucky University and Indianapolis this past Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Senior forward Amanda Harnist, who scored eight points against the Eagles in the first meeting, had 27 points in the Panthers' most recent victory, a 77-63 triumph at Indianapolis. Junior center Katie Behrens and junior forward Kristen Rowe lead the Panthers with 10.9 and 10.1 points per game, respectively, while Harnist is bringing down a team-high 5.2 rebounds per appearance.

Following USI's bout at Kentucky Wesleyan, the Eagles travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University Thursday at 4:45 p.m. (CST) before coming home to host Northern Kentucky for Senior Day Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles defeated Bellarmine, 76-59, at the PAC in December. The Knights, who host Indianapolis Monday, are currently 11-12 overall and 6-9 in the GLVC.

USI will be looking for retribution when it hosts Northern Kentucky Saturday. The Norse (15-9, 9-7 GLVC), who defeated Bellarmine, 66-43, this past Saturday in Highland Heights, Kentucky, handed the Eagles a 71-38 loss at the Bank of Kentucky Center to begin the GLVC schedule in December. Northern Kentucky visits Indianapolis Thursday before traveling to Evansville for Saturday's contest.

Saturday's game, which also will be broadcast live on the News 25 Sports Channel, is USI's Pink Zone game. The Eagles will be wearing their pink uniforms and are asking all fans to dress in pink in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness.
