SOMERS, Wis.—Nothing seemed to go right for the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Screaming Eagles suffered a 76-50 setback at the hands of No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
The host Rangers (6-3, 1-1 GLVC) used a 25-4 run that lasted nearly 10 minutes in the opening period to take a commanding 33-11 advantage. USI committed 14 turnovers in the first half and watched as the Rangers shot nearly 60 percent from the field as it went into the break trailing 44-19.
UW-Parkside extended its advantage in the second period by scoring the first 13 points of the half to take a 57-19 lead with 15 minutes to play.
“When you play a team like Wisconsin-Parkside, any time you make a mistake they make you pay for it,” USI Head Coach
Rick Stein said. “We made too many mistakes with the basketball, too many mistakes guarding the basketball and they made us pay for it.”
Despite the rough start to the second period, the Eagles (5-3, 0-2 GLVC) continued to fight, outscoring the Rangers, 29-16, throughout the final 14 minutes of the contest.
“We played an experienced team today, one that was in the regional championship a year ago,” Stein said. “What I loved about our team late in the game was our intensity and the way we finished. I thought we were a lot better basketball team in the last 12 minutes than we were in the first 12 minutes.
“We are going to learn from this and the next time we play them, we'll be much improved,” Stein continued. “One of the things I know is that our best basketball is ahead of us.”
Freshman forward/center Mary O'Keefe and senior guard/forward
Kristin Raker each had 11 points to lead the Eagles. Senior guard Jadee Rooney had 16 points and five assists to pace the Rangers.
USI returns to action December 17 when it hosts Salem International University at the Physical Activities Center. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
