Eagles double-up Tigers, cruise to win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team shot nearly 50 percent from the field as it cruised to an 81-39 victory over Salem International University Saturday at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (6-3) scored 18 of the game's first 22 points to take an 18-4 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the opening period. The Screaming Eagles increased their advantage to 20 points later in the half before going into the locker room with a comfortable 34-19 halftime advantage.

The Eagles dominated the lane in the opening half, outscoring the undersized Fighting Tigers, 26-6, in the paint in the first 20 minutes and 48-12 for the game.

With USI leading by 17 with a little more than 15 minutes to play in the contest, sophomore guard Stephanie Carpenter scored seven straight points as the Eagles increased their cushion to 49-25 with 14:32 to play. USI used an 11-0 spurt later in the period to add to their advantage, and closed the contest by scoring 12 of the final 15 points.

Carpenter was one of seven Eagles' to score at least six points as she finished with eight. Freshman forward/centers Anna Hackert and Mary O'Keefe paced the Eagles with 17 and 13 points, respectively, while senior guard Cootie Leeberg added 12 points.

O'Keefe also added six rebounds in addition to a game-high five assists and five steals. Hackert, who was 7-of-10 from the field, added four rebounds and two assists.

Freshman forward Brooke Valentine chipped in six points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Eagles, who out-rebounded the Salem International, 37-25.

USI finished the game with 20 steals, forcing the Tigers into 32 turnovers and holding Salem International to a .286 shooting percentage.

Salem International (0-11) was led by junior guard Desiree Dwyer, who went 9-of-10 from the free throw to finish with 15 points.

The Eagles return to action December 30 when they travel to Detroit, Michigan, to take on Midwest Region foe Wayne State University. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. (CST).
