Eagles look to build on strong start

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team looks to build on its strong start when it hosts NAIA Division I Mid-Continent College Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) at the Physical Activities Center. USI (2-0) is coming off a commanding 102-40 victory over Principia College Tuesday night that saw the Screaming Eagles tie a single-game school record with 29 steals and shoot nearly 60 percent from the field.

Freshman forward/center Anna Hackert and freshman forward Brooke Valentine led the Eagles with 24 and 20 points, respectively, while Hackert finished with a game-high eight rebounds.

Hackert and Valentine each are averaging 16.5 points per appearance to lead the Eagles through the first two games. Hackert is averaging a team-best 7.5 rebounds per contest, while Valentine is contributing 5.5 rebounds per outing.

Collectively, USI's post players have been a strong point in the first two contests as they have averaged 45.0 points and 21.0 rebounds per contest.

Senior guard/forward Kristin Raker is adding 11.0 points and 3.0 assists per game, while senior guard Cootie Leeberg is chipping in 10.0 points per outing.

Sophomore guard Ariel Barnes also is making major contributions off the bench as she is averaging 9.0 points and shooting 77.8 percent from the field.

Mid-Continent (3-4), which plays Murray State University Thursday night in Murray, Kentucky, is coming off a 63-61 victory over Brescia University Tuesday night in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Cougars shot 47 percent from the field and overcame a four-point halftime deficit to defeat the Bearcats.

Senior guard Shanice Martin led the Cougars with 16 points, while sophomore forward Stephanie Malone added 15 points in the win. Former USI player Chantiera Johnson, who is second on the team with 11.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, had 11 points and five rebounds against Brescia. Johnson was a freshman on USI's NCAA II Tournament team in 2009-10.

Malone leads the Cougars with 15.3 points and 12.2 rebounds per contest, while Martin is averaging 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Friday's game is the second meeting between USI and Mid-Continent in women's basketball. USI won the first meeting, 79-55, at the PAC on November 24, 2008.
