EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team used a hot-shooting first-half performance and some clutch free throw shooting in the second half to upset the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 72-66, Saturday afternoon for Homecoming at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (12-8, 8-4 GLVC) shot 56.7 percent in the opening period and used runs of 9-0 and 13-0 to build a 24-point first-half lead. Senior guard Amie Newhart scored 14 of her game-high 29 points in the opening period as the Screaming Eagles took a 43-25 advantage into the break.

Despite the Eagles' strong start, the visiting Rangers of UW-Parkside chipped away at the Eagles lead in the second period as USI's offense began to cool off.

USI shot just 25.9 percent from the field and was 0-8 from three-point range in the last 20 minutes, allowing the Rangers to cut USI's lead to as little as three points in the final minute of regulation.

Newhart, who was 13-of-14 at the free throw line, made five free throws in the final 35 seconds as the Eagles staved off the Rangers for the six-point victory.

Senior guard Ellen Young scored eight crucial points in the first six minutes of the second half to help the Eagles build a 20-point lead with less than 14 minutes to play in the contest. Young finished the game with 19 points, helping the Eagles pick up their second straight win and their seventh triumph in the month of January.

The Eagles also got nine points and eight rebounds from senior forward/center Courtney Perry, while senior guard Stephanie Gehlhausen corralled a team-high nine rebounds.

UW-Parkside (16-5, 10-3 GLVC) was led by junior forward Amy Selk, who finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. USI held the Rangers' leading scorer, junior guard Jadee Rooney, to just seven points and 1-of-15 shooting.

The Eagles, who remain tied for the GLVC East Division lead with Northern Kentucky University, embark on a five-game road trip beginning Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they visit Rockhurst University.
