Game Notes (pdf.)
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Fresh off its first triple-overtime game in the program's history, the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball has to have a short memory as it prepares for GLVC North Division foes Lewis University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside this week.
The Screaming Eagles (10-8, 6-4 GLVC) host Lewis Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center before welcoming UW-Parkside to the PAC Saturday at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
USI, which lost to the University of Indianapolis, 101-100, in the triple-overtime affair, is in a three-way tie atop the GLVC East Division with Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky. The Eagles, who are just a game in front of Bellarmine University and Kentucky Wesleyan College, also are tied for fifth overall in the GLVC standings.
With eight games remaining in the regular season, each contest becomes more critical as the top six overall teams in the GLVC will host a first-round game in the conference's post-season tournament, which begins February 26.
Protecting their home court also is crucial for the Eagles, who will embark on a five-game road swing following Saturday's contest with UW-Parkside.
Leading the Eagles into this week's games are senior guards
Ellen Young and
Amie Newhart. Young, who had 16 points and six rebounds against Indianapolis, leads the Eagles and ranks 10th in the GLVC with 14.7 points per appearance. Newhart, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week after averaging 33.0 points per game last week, is 15th in the conference with 13.6 points per contest and 14th in the league with a team-high 3.2 assists per outing.
Senior forward/center
Courtney Perry, who is averaging 7.6 points per game, is 12th in the GLVC with a team-high 6.3 rebounds per appearance. As a team, the Eagles lead the GLVC with 14.72 offensive rebounds per game and are second in the league in GLVC-only contests with a plus-7.4 rebounding margin.
The Flyers of Lewis (9-9, 5-5 GLVC) get the task of playing an opponent that is coming off a triple-overtime loss for the second straight game when they face the Eagles Thursday. Lewis, which defeated Missouri University of Science & Technology, 68-64, Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois, has won two of the last three games.
Senior forward Jenny Turpel, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds against Missouri S&T, leads the Flyers with 15.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
USI trails the all-time series with Lewis, 30-26, and is 9-13 against the Flyers since 2000 after suffering a 60-51 setback in Romeoville during the regular season last year and a 56-54 loss in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament last February in Evansville.
The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Rangers of UW-Parkside, 19-6, and are 11-6 in the series since 2000 despite suffering a 74-64 loss to UW-Parkside in Somers, Wisconsin, last year.
UW-Parkside (15-4, 9-2 GLVC), which defeated Missouri S&T, 80-77, in triple-overtime last Thursday, has won two straight and nine of its last 11 games after defeating Maryville University, 70-60, this past Saturday.
The Rangers, who visit Indianapolis Thursday, are the GLVC's top rebounding team with a plus-9.2 rebounding margin. Junior guard Jadee Rooney leads the Rangers with 14.4 points and 4.1 assists per game, while junior forward Amy Selk is chipping in 8.9 points and a team-best 8.5 rebounds per appearance. Junior forward Brittany Beyer and senior center Brittany Hogan are contributing 13.3 and 11.7 points per game, respectively.
Both games this week will be broadcast on WPSR 90.7 FM, while live stats, audio, and video can be accessed at gousieagles.com.
