EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior guard
Amie Newhart had a career-high 39 points, but it was not enough as the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team lost a 101-100 triple-overtime thriller to Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division foe University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
The triple-overtime game was the first in the history of the USI women's basketball program, while the 39 points were the most by a Screaming Eagles' player since USI Hall of Fame member and current Indianapolis Head Coach LeAnn Freeland '97 dropped in 39 points Indiana University/Purdue University-Ft. Wayne February 15, 1997.
Just getting to overtime was a challenge for the Eagles, who trailed by as many as eight points in the second half. USI slowly and methodically chipped away at the Greyhounds lead before taking a 61-59 lead with one minute to play in regulation.
Indianapolis (11-7, 6-4 GLVC), however, got a bucket from junior guard Cayla Keegan in the final 10 seconds to tie the contest and send the game into the first overtime period.
Newhart's three-pointer in the final 10 seconds of the first overtime tied the contest at 75, extending the game to yet another period.
The Eagles (10-8, 6-4 GLVC) led 81-78 with a minute to play in the second overtime, but a layup by senior forward/center Katie Lyons, who led Indianapolis with 32 points, and a free throw by freshman guard Katy McIntosh in the final 50 seconds knotted the game up with 20 seconds to play.
Newhart missed a layup and senior guard
Stephanie Gehlhausen's ensuing tip-in as the clock hit zero did not fall as the contest went to a record third overtime.
Both teams exploded in the final overtime period, but it was a 7-0 run that tilted the scales in favor of Indianapolis. The Eagles held an 88-86 lead with less than three minutes to play, but a pair of free throws followed by a layup by Lyons gave the Greyhounds a 90-88 edge.
McIntosh, who was 13-of-14 from the free throw line to finish with 17 points, converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give Indianapolis a 93-88 cushion with 51 seconds to play.
The two team traded points in the final 36 seconds, with sophomore guard Kristin Turner sinking four straight free throws to give Indianapolis an insurmountable 101-97 advantage with 4.8 seconds remaining in the game. Turner finished the game with 19 points and also was 13-of-14 from the charity stripe—Indianapolis converted 45-of-56 free throw attempts for the game.
Newhart hit a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Eagles their first 100-point game since defeating Marygrove 101-40 last season, a remarkable accomplishment when factoring in that the Eagles trailed 31-26 at the intermission.
In addition to Newhart, who moved into eighth-place all-time at USI in career scoring, senior guard
Ellen Young and freshman forward/center
Nicole Hazemi added 16 and 14 points, respectively. Gehlhausen added nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
The Eagles, who fall into a three-way tie with Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky University atop the GLVC East Division, return to action Thursday at 5:15 p.m. when they host Lewis University at the PAC.
