EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team stopped a two-match losing skid with a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI raises its record to 4-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the GLVC, while UWP goes to 4-2-1, 2-2-1 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles opened the scoring in the first half when senior forward
Simon Rawnsley (England) found the back of the goal for his fourth goal of the season at 35:39. Sophomore midfielder
Nolan Harvath (Fairmont, West Virginia) assisted on the play by flicking the ball to Rawnsley in front of the UW-Parkside goal.
USI went up 2-0 at 66:27 of the second half when sophomore forward
Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Illinois) scored on a give-and-go with Rawnsley. Andrekus dribbled across the field and passed the ball to Rawnsley, who gave the ball back for Andrekus' second goal of the season.
The Rangers cut the Eagle lead in half with a goal at 72:44, but the USI defense stood tall and allowed only one more shot-on-goal in the final 17 minutes. USI sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Dempsey (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his second win of the year, allowing the one goal and making nine saves.
UW-Parkside dominated in total shots, 17-9, and limited the Eagles to only four shots on-goal. The Rangers also had the advantage in the game, 7-3.
The Eagles return to the road next weekend for a pair of GLVC contests. USI visits Quincy University Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the University of Illinois-Springfield Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The next home game for USI is October 1 when Drury University makes an appearance at Strassweg Field.
