BOX SCORES AND PLAY-BY-PLAY: USI 15, Oakland City 4
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored in five-straight innings to defeat Oakland City University, 15-4, in a game that was halted due to Wednesday night's storms. USI raises its record to 26-8 overall, while OCU falls to 12-12 in 2010.
The Screaming Eagles had to rally to defeat the Mighty Oaks after spotting them a pair of two run leads to start the game Wednesday. OCU built leads of 2-0 in the first inning and 4-2 in the third inning, only to see USI tie the score in the bottom half of each inning.
USI took its first lead of the contest when the game resumed Thursday night on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles took the lead for good when junior centerfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana) and junior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana) scored on a throwing error by OCU shortstop Jorge Tauil.
Leading 6-4, the Eagles continued their offensive assault by scoring two more in the fifth and sixth to lead 10-4. USI blew the game open with a five-run seventh to produce the 15-4 final.
Individually, senior outfielder Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) led the way at the plate by going three-for-five with two runs scored, three RBIs, and a double. Junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) also had three hits and three runs scored in the win.
On the mound, junior right-hander Jarod Canterbury (Petersburg, Indiana) picked up the win in relief. Canterbury (3-0) pitched three innings (one Wednesday night and two Thursday), scattering four hits and two walks to get his third win as an Eagle.
Junior pitcher/designated hitter Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana) made his first USI start on the mound, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in three innings of work. Junior left-hander Scott Handley (Schererville, Indiana), who threw two innings, and junior right-hander Mark Walther (Kankakee, Illinois), who pitched the ninth, finished the game on the mound for USI.
The Eagles resume GLVC action this weekend when they travel to Rockhurst University for a four-game series in Kansas City, Missouri. The Hawks, who hosted Washburn University this evening, started today's action 16-13 overall and 7-7 in the GLVC.
USI and Rockhurst split the four-game series last year. The Hawks also lead the all-time series, 8-7.
