USI stumbles in the "Battle at the Braun"

BOX SCORES AND PLAY-BY-PLAY:
Evansville 8, USI 2

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 16th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team lost the annual “Battle at the Braun” to the University of Evansville, 8-2, Tuesday evening at the Aces' Charles H. Braun Stadium. USI falls to 34-11 overall in 2010, while the Aces rise to 21-16.

Evansville jumped out in front early in the game with a tally in the first and two more in the second to lead 3-0. The Aces increased the lead to 8-0 with a five-spot in the fifth.

Aces' starting right-hander Kyle Lloyd stymied the Screaming Eagles for the first six innings, only allowing three runners to reach on a hit batter, a base hit, and a throwing error. USI junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) got the Eagles first hit of the game in the fourth, but was stranded at third base.

The Eagles finally got to Lloyd in the top of the seventh when they scored a pair of runs. Senior rightfielder Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by junior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana). Enright would come around to score two batters later on a RBI single by sophomore second baseman Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky).

Ehmke led the Eagles at the plate with two of USI's five hits.

USI junior right-hander Dan Marcacci (Jupiter, Florida) started the game for the Eagles and took the loss. Marcacci (4-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits, three walks, and two hit batters. The junior right-hander did strike out four batters.

Junior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) relieved Marcacci in the fifth and 2.1 innings, while senior shortstop/pitcher Wandy Rosario (Boston, Massachusetts) threw a scoreless eighth. Leach allowed two hits and three unearned runs in his 2.1 innings.

USI resumes its 11-game road swing and GLVC action this weekend when it travels to Saint Joseph's College for a four-game series Saturday and Sunday. The first pitch each day is scheduled for noon.
