USI 16, Missouri S&T 10
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 15th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored 13 times in the first six innings and held on to defeat Missouri University of Science and Technology, 16-10, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI goes to 33-9 overall and 19-3 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T falls to 12-28, 9-13 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles put at least a run across the plate in all but one inning, including three-run rallies in the second, fourth, fifth, and eighth. The Miners, trailing 13-2, cut the Eagle lead to four runs, 13-9, with seven runs in the seventh and eighth.
USI pushed the margin to back to seven runs, 16-9, on a three-run home run by junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) in the bottom of the eighth. The home run was the team-best 10th of the season by Mooney, who went two-for-four with two runs scored and a team-high four RBIs.
The 20-hit USI attack was led by senior rightfielder Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) junior designated hitter Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana), and junior leftfielder #Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana). Ehmke tied a school record with three doubles, while going four-for-five, with a run scored and two RBIs.
Martin finished the day a single short of the cycle, going three-for-five with a double, triple, home run, three runs scored and three RBIs. Huling ended the day three-for-five with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
On the mound, USI junior right-hander Taylor Dennis went six-plus innings to record his fifth win of the season. Dennis (5-1) allowed five runs on nine hits, while striking out four.
Junior right-handers Mark Walther (Kankakee, Illinois) and Jarod Canterbury (Petersburg,Illinois) finished the game for the Eagles and Dennis. Walther allowed six hits and four runs in 1.2 innings, while Canterbury gave up four hits and one run in 1.1 innings.
The Eagles and the Miners conclude the four-game series Sunday with a noon Senior Day doubleheader. Prior to the Sunday's doubleheader, USI will honor its six seniors -- Kevin O'Hair, Wandy Rosario, Casey Geiger, Wes Fink, Kyle Rowley, and Ehmke.
