EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team capped off its historic first night game at home with a 4-3 win over Wayne State College (NE) Monday evening. USI raises its record to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the Dunn Hospitality Invitational, while WSC falls to 4-9, 0-4 in the tournament. Monday's game was the first night game in the history of the USI Baseball Field.
To post a victory in the first ever night game in the history of the USI Baseball Field, the Screaming Eagles had score three times in the bottom of the eighth, erasing a 3-1 defict and post its ninth win of the year.
USI junior leftfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana) led off with a single and scored on an RBI triple by senior shortstop/pitcher Wandy Rosario (Boston, Massachusetts). Rosario knotted the score, 3-3, on a single by junior centerfielder Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana) after sophomore second baseman Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) walked to put runners at the corners.
Vance scored the third run of the inning and the game winner all the way from second base on a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield by junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri). WSC centerfielder Joe Wendte made a great stumbling catch which allowed Vance to tag and score.
The Eagles jumped out in front with a tally in the third inning. Senior third baseman Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) gave USI a 1-0 lead when he scored on a two-out single by Rosario. Fink had led off the inning with a single to right center, advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior designated hitter Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana).
The Wildcats rallied to take a 3-1 lead with a two-out three-run sixth inning. The Eagles had a chance to tie the score in the bottom half of the inning, but stranded a pair of runners after putting them at second and third with no outs.
On the mound, junior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) recorded his second victory of the year out of the bullpen. Leach allowed three-runs in the sixth after being hit by a line drive, while giving up five WSC hits. He also struck out four batters.
USI senior right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) made his first start and appearance since suffering an elbow injury last year. Geiger went the first four innings and allowed two hits while striking out one.
Rosario finished the game for the Eagles by pitching a perfect ninth inning to record his first save as an Eagle.
The Eagles continues the 12-game homestand Wednesday when they host Bellarmine University for a non-conference game. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
USI leads the all-time series with Bellarmine, 62-56, after winning three of four last year against the Knights. Bellarmine is 6-10 to start the 2010 campaign.
