USI wins 7-6 comeback effort

BOX SCORE: USI 7, UWP 6

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 26th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team came back from a four-run deficit to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 7-6, Saturday afternoon in the Dunn Hospitality Invitational at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record to 7-4 overall, while UW-Parkside falls to 3-8.

After both teams scored runs in the second inning, the Rangers used a four-run third to take a 5-1 lead. The Screaming Eagles cut into the four-run lead with a two-run, two-out rally and trailed 5-3 after three.

USI junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) keyed the third inning rally with a two-run single, but was thrown out trying to take second on the play.

The Rangers pushed their lead back to three, 6-3, with a tally in the fifth, but the Eagles bounced back to tie the score with a three-run sixth. USI tied the score after loading the bases on a sacrifice fly by junior leftfielder Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana) and a two-run double by senior shortstop Wandy Rosario (Boston, Massachusetts).

The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh with a third two-out rally. Mooney was hit with a pitch with two outs and advanced to third on a double by junior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana) before scoring the winning run on an RBI-single by senior third baseman Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee).

The win on the mound went to sophomore right-hander Josh Schultze (Evansville, Indiana), who posted his first win as an Eagle after providing 6.2 strong innings of work out of the bullpen. Schultze (1-0) scattered three hits and allowed one unearned after relieving starting junior right-hander Taylor Dennis (Covington, Indiana), who six hits and five runs in 2.1 innings of work.

In the first game today, UW-Parkside held on to defeat Wayne State College (NE), 10-7, to extend the Rangers' winning streak to three games. The Rangers, who are under the direction of former USI assistant Joel Weaver, had leads of 7-0 and 10-4 leads before closing the door on the Wildcats in the final two innings.

The Dunn Hospitality Invitational resumes Sunday at the USI Baseball Field when UW-Parkside plays WSC at 11 p.m., while USI takes on WSC in the second game at 2:30 p.m.
