EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored nine times in the first inning and cruised to a 14-4 victory over Oakland City University Wednesday night at the USI Baseball Field. USI, which has won seven straight games, raises its record to 17-7 overall, while OCU falls to 5-8 in 2010.
USI junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) started the scoring by hitting a two-run blast to put the Screaming Eagles up 2-0. The home run was Mooney's third of the year and tied him for the team-lead with sophomore second baseman Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky).
After Mooney's home run, the Eagles sent 11 more batters to the plate and scored seven more times to lead 9-0. USI would go on to score one more in the second and four more fourth, while OCU answered with single tallies in the second and sixth and a pair of runs in the fifth.
Overall, USI was led offensively by Mooney, who was two-for-three with a run scored, three RBIs, and a home run, while Vance was two-for-three with three runs scored, three RBIs, and a triple.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Josh Schultze (Evansville, Indiana) posted his second win of the year. Schultze (2-1) scattered seven hits and allowed four runs (one earned) in six innings of work, while striking out seven.
Junior left-hander Scott Handley (Schererville, Indiana) and senior pitcher/infielder #WandyRosario# (Boston, Massachusetts) finished the game for Schultze. Handley pitched two scoreless innings, while Rosario threw a perfect ninth.
USI resumes GLVC play this weekend when they travel to Maryville University for a four-game series Saturday and Sunday in St. Louis, Missouri. The first pitch each day is scheduled for noon.
This will be the first meeting between the Eagles and the Saints on the diamond. Maryville, currently, is 4-11 overall and 1-6 in the GLVC.
