USI wins on the road at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 24th -ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team won a non-conference road game at Bellarmine University, 7-3, Wednesday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. USI goes to 12-7 overall, while Bellarmine falls to 9-12.

The Screaming Eagles got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when they scored twice after loading the bases with no one out. Junior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana) crossed the plate when junior leftfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana) walked, while senior rightfielder Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) gave USI a 2-0 lead after scoring on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky).

The Knights rebounded to tie the score 2-2 in the bottom half of the second and took the lead 3-2 with a tally in their half of the third.

The Bellarmine lead lasted until the top of the fifth when the Eagles loaded the based once again, scoring twice to lead 4-3. Ehmke and senior third baseman Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) drew walks to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs.

USI increased the lead to 7-3 in the seventh on Fink's second RBI of the game and Huling's two-run single. Huling finished the game with a team-high three RBIs.

On the mound, junior left-hander Scott Handley (Schererville, Indiana) posted his first win as an Eagle. Handley (1-1) pitched a perfect five innings in relief of starting junior right-hander Jared Canterbury (Petersburg, Indiana), striking out two.

Canterbury started and went the first four innings. He allowed four hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out one.

The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field Friday and Saturday when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis for the first half of a four-game series. The first pitch Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m., while the start time Saturday is 2 p.m.

The second half of the four-game series moves to St. Louis, Missouri, when the Eagles and the Tritons play at the UMSL Baseball Field. The opener of the doubleheader begins at noon.
