EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana) had five hits and drove in the winning run in the ninth inning as the Screaming Eagles defeated the University of Indianapolis, 8-7, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI rises to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, while UIndy falls to 7-7, 3-1 GLVC.
Enright, who finished the game by going five-for-five, two RBIs, and a run scored, drove in senior rightfielder Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth. Ehmke had doubled into scoring position to lead-off the ninth.
For the second game in a row, the Greyhounds jumped out in front with a run in the top of the second. The Eagles tied the score 1-1 with a tally in the bottom of the third, but fell behind when the Greyhounds retook the lead, 2-1 with a run in the top of the fourth.
USI tied the game and took its first lead with a three-run rally in the bottom half of the fourth with two outs. Senior shortstop/pitcher Wandy Rosario (Boston, Massachusetts) knocked in the tying and lead runs with an RBI single before scoring USI's fourth run of the game on an error by the UIndy centerfielder.
The Greyhound responded with a four-run fifth inning to lead 6-4, but the Eagles knotted the score back up at 6-6 in the bottom half of inning. Enright and junior centerfielder Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana) singled with one out and scored on a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Ben Griggs (Evansville, Indiana).
The Eagles took their second lead of the game, 7-6, in the bottom of the seventh when Ehmke scored on an RBI single by junior leftfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana). Ehmke had reached on an error and advanced to third on a single by Blinn and a walk by senior designated hitter Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee).
The Greyhounds set the stage for Enright in the top of the ninth when they tied the score, 7-7, on double, a ground out, and a single up the middle.
USI junior right-hander Taylor Dennis (Covington, Indiana) started for the Eagles on the mound and took the no-decision. Dennis allowed 11 hits and six runs (two earned) over eight innings of work, while striking out two .
Rosario (1-0) recorded his first win as an Eagles after giving up a run on two hits in the ninth inning. The senior also was three-for-five at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs.
The Eagles finishes its 12-game homestand Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan College. KWC, which started Saturday with a 6-8 overall record, played its first GLVC games of the year today at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
