USI starts play in Arkansas with a win

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — The 23rd -ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team opened the second half of a six-game road swing with a 12-6 win at Arkansas Tech University Friday afternoon in Russellville, Arkansas. USI's record goes to 3-1, while Arkansas Tech is 6-4.

The Screaming Eagles posted big rallies in the second and fifth innings to lead 10-3 after five innings. USI scored its four runs in the second with the help of four Arkansas Tech errors, while the Eagles five-run fifth was high-lighted by the first home run of the year by junior leftfielder Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana).

USI finished out the scoring with a single tally in the third, sixth, and seventh inning. ATU tried to push its way back into the game with a single runs in the first, third, fourth, and two run in the sixth before finishing the scoring with a single tally in the eighth.

The Eagles were led by the three-hit performance of senior rightfielder Caleb Emhke (Waterloo, Indiana), who was three-for-four. Blinn and junior centerfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana) followed Ehmke by going two-for-four and a pair of RBIs each.

Adding multi hit performances were junior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana) and sophomore second baseman Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky). Enright's two hits produced an RBI and two runs scored, while Vance drove in a run.

On the mound, senior right-hander Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) posted his second win of the year after pitching seven innings. Choate, who helped himself by driving in a pair of runs, allowed 11 hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out one.

USI sophomore right-hander Josh Schultze (Evansville, Indiana) followed Choate to the mound, going two-thirds of an inning and allowing one run on a pair of hits. Junior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) finished the game with 1.1 innings of shutout work.

The Eagles finish six-game road swing with a pair of neutral site games against Missouri Western State University in Russellville. The doubleheader starts at noon.
