Game Notes
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—After playing nine of its first 15 games at the Physical Activities Center, the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team must adjust to life on the road as the Screaming Eagles play seven of their next eight games away from the friendly confines of the PAC.
USI (13-2, 4-0 GLVC) begins its stretch Thursday with the first of three straight road games when it visits Missouri University of Science and Technology. The Eagles also visit GLVC-newcomer Maryville University Saturday.
Tip-off for Thursday's game in Rolla, Missouri, is slated for 5:30 p.m., while Saturday's game in St. Louis is schedule for a 1 p.m. start time. Game coverage, including live stats, audio, and video, can be found at www.gousieagles.com.
The Eagles, who are off to their best 15-game start since 2000-01, have won 12 straight games heading into their dual with Missouri S&T. USI's winning streak, which most recently included an 84-67 triumph over Saint Joseph's College, is the longest string of wins since the Eagles racked up 15 straight victories in 2000-01.
Senior guard/forward Abby Williams and junior guard Ellen Young led the Eagles with 20 and 18 points, respectively, in the win over the Pumas.
Young, the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for December, leads USI with 15.1 points per game, while fellow classmate Amie Newhart is chipping in 12.5 points and a team-best 3.8 assists per appearance. Williams is third on the team with 8.9 points per game and is averaging 11.3 points in USI's last eight games.
USI, which split the season series with Missouri S&T a year ago, trails the all-time series with the Miners, 9-1 and is 1-7 against Missouri S&T since 2000. The Eagles, however, defeated Missouri S&T 79-75 in Rolla last January, but suffered a tough 85-82 setback at the PAC in February.
Missouri S&T (7-5, 2-2 GLVC) is coming off a tough 83-75 home loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Monday night. Sophomore guard Courtney Kemp led the Miners with 16 points and five assists, while senior guard Andrea Downs chipped in 11 points and five assists.
Downs leads the Miners with 12.1 points per appearance, while Kemp is averaging 8.8 points and a team-best 3.8 assists per appearance.
Saturday's game will be the first-ever meeting between USI and Maryville in women's basketball. The Saints (3-8, 1-2 GLVC) broke a six-game losing streak with their 81-72 win over Missouri-St. Louis last Saturday.
Freshman forward Abby Deuthman led the Saints with 15 points, while sophomore forward Tori Tyner chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward/center Angela Pepowski leads the Saints, who host No. 3 University of Indianapolis Thursday evening, with 10.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest.
