USI advances with 13-6 win

SAUGET, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana baseball sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) hit three home runs and drove in six RBIs to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 13-6 victory over Quincy University in the loser's bracket of the GLVC Tournament Friday afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.

The first of Mooney's three two-run blasts came in the first inning when he gave the Eagles (36-16) a 2-0 lead. He increased a USI lead to 5-2 in the top of the second with his second round tripper, while his third came in the eighth to give USI an 11-6 advantage. Mooney finished the game by going four-for-four with three home runs as well as being hit by a pitch and walking once.

On board for two of Mooney's home runs was freshman second baseman Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky), who had three hits, scored twice, and drove two runs of himself. Sophomore third baseman Ben Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) and senior rightfielder Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana) also had a pair of hits in the victory.

The Eagles, overall, scored 13 times on 14 hits and was aided by seven walks allowed by four Hawk pitchers.

On the mound, USI junior righthander D.J. Smith (Vincennes, Indiana) posted his sixth win of the year. Smith (6-1) allowed seven hits and five runs, three earned, while walking two and striking out one in six innings of work.

Sophomore right-hander Trevor Leach finished the game for USI and earned his first save of the season. Leach pitched three innings and allowed two hits and one run, while striking out one.

USI resumes GLVC Tournament action Saturday versus the loser of the Bellarmine University and University of Indianapolis contest which is scheduled to begin at 10:30 p.m. tonight. The start time of the Eagles next game on Saturday is still to be determined.
