SAUGET, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team advanced in the GLVC Tournament with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bellarmine University, but lost a 13-4 elimination-game to the University of Indianapolis Saturday evening at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.

USI senior leftfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) hit a game-winning home run in the 11th inning to lead the Screaming Eagles past Bellarmine, 2-1, in the first game of the night. Werry led off the 11th with his seventh blast of the year well over the leftfielder wall.

The home run also made a winner out of senior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana), who pitched the final three innings for the Eagles. Larsen (6-5) did not allow a hit in three innings, striking out seven.

Going the first eight innings for the Eagles was senior right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana). Dewig scattered eight hits and allowed one run over a career-high eight innings of work, while striking out a career-high nine Knight (33-24) hitters.

USI got their first run in the first inning when Werry singled in junior first baseman Tyler Choate (Carmi, Indiana). Choate had doubled with two-outs to start the first inning rally.

The Eagles could not carry the extra-inning victory momentum in the game with Indianapolis and was eliminated, 13-4. The Greyhounds (40-18) scored 10 runs in the first four innings, including a six spot in the fourth.

Indianapolis scored their 13 runs on 13 hits, aided by eight walks and four hit batters.

Trailing 10-1, USI tried to blast their way back into the contest with solo shots by sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) and senior rightfielder Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana). Mooney, who entered the GLVC Tournament with just one home run this season, raised his season total to five with his fourth of the playoff, while Bruce hits his career-best fourth of the season.

USI loaded the bases in the eighth with nobody out, but was only to get one runner across the plate and saw the rally stopped by a 1-2-3 double play.

The Eagles (37-17) will await word on an at-large berth in the NCAA Division II Midwest Tournament. Tournament pairings will be announced late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
