USI drops extra-inning affair to start GLVC Tournament

Box Score: Bellarmine 7, Southern Indiana 4 (10 Innings)

SAUGET, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team could not hold on against Bellarmine University in the first round of the GLVC Tournament, falling 7-4 in 10 innings. The GLVC Tournament is being held at the GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Eagles (35-16) started scoring with a run in the fourth. Sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) singled with one out and one batter later scored on a single by senior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana).

The Knight (33-22) responded by tying the score in the top of the fifth with the help of a pair of Eagle errors. USI got the momentum back in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out three-run rally.

Freshman second baseman Brad Vance singled with two-out in the fifth to start the rally, while senior rightfielder Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana) walked and senior centerfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado) reached on a pass ball-strikeout to load the bases. Mooney proceeded to clear the bases with a three-run double to right center and give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

Bellarmine cut the USI lead to 4-3 with a tally in the top of the sixth and the seventh before tying the game in the top of the eighth, 4-4.

The Knights touched USI senior right-handed closer Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) for three in the 10th to get the victory. Bellarmine's 10th-inning rally was sparked by RBI doubles by centerfielder Adam Chester and catcher Kyle Roden.

Choate started the game for the Eagles and got the no decision. He allowed nine hits and three runs, two earned, in 6.2 innings of work before giving way to sophomore right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana). Leach allowed the tying run and finished his day by allowing a run and three hits in two innings prior to being relieved by Larsen (5-5).

USI resumes GLVC Tournament action Friday and will play loser of the Northern Kentucky University and Quincy University in the noon game.
