QUINCY, Ill. – The 22nd-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team clinched the GLVC West Division championship for the second straight season with a 6-4 game one victory at Quincy University Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Illinois. USI finished the regular season by splitting the doubleheader, losing the second game 10-8.
The Screaming Eagles finish the 2009 regular season campaign with a 35-15 overall mark, 20-7 GLVC, and 13-7 West Division, while the Hawk go to 29-23, 18-9 GLVC, and 10-9 West.
In the game one victory to clinch the West Division, USI set a new single season record for home runs when senior leftfielder
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) and freshman second basemanÂ
Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) hit the squad's 37th and 38th of the year. The old record of 37 was set by the 1994 squad.
Vance would finish the opener three-for-three, including the home run, with a run scored and four RBIs. Werry also had three hits in game one with three runs scored and the RBI on the home run.
The Eagles built a 6-1 lead in the opener with a run in the second, a tally in the fifth, a four-run sixth, and a final run in the seventh. The Hawks made a game of it in the bottom of the seventh putting three runs across to pull to within 6-4, but USI senior right-handed closerÂ
Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) got back on track by posting his 16th save of the season.
USI seniorÂ
Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) posted his second win of the season by pitching a strong five innings. Dewig (2-2) allowed one unearned run and scattered six hits, while striking out two.
In the nightcap, the Eagles had control of the game early and built 7-3 lead after five innings. The Hawks flew back into the game with a three-run sixth and took the lead with a game-winning four-run seventh.
USI responded with a run in the eighth, but left runners at first and third in the ninth to drop the 10-8 decision. Four USI hurlers were hampered by three Eagle errors in giving up five unearned runs.

Shad Macke (Evansville, Indiana) took the loss in the second game. Macke (0-2) allowed two of the five earned runs in the seventh after following senior right-handed starterÂ
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) and junior right-handerÂ
Cody Brandenstein (Evansville, Indiana) to the mound. Sophomore right-handerÂ
Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) followed Macke to the mound and allowed two unearned runs.
At the plate, USI was led in the nightcap by Werry, sophomore catcherÂ
Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri), and junior designated hitterÂ
Kyle Rowley (Indianapolis, Indiana) with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs each.
The next action for the Eagles will be in the GLVC Tournament May 7-10 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. USI will play Bellarmine University in the first round Thursday at 3 p.m.
