Eagles blast Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team scored a combined 26 runs off 37 hits and five home runs as it swept a doubleheader from Oakland City University, 9-1 and 17-2, Tuesday afternoon. Both games ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

In game one, the Screaming Eagles (15-32) scored twice in the top of the first inning and three times in the second inning to take a 5-1 advantage. Sophomore second baseman Amanda Brendel (Salem, Illinois) had three RBIs in the first two innings, including a two-run double in the second frame, to aid the Eagles' attack.

USI got a lead-off home run from senior rightfielder Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) in the fourth frame as it tacked on three more tallies to extend its advantage to 7-1.

Sophomore hurler Dawn McClellan (Valparaiso, Indiana) picked up the victory after scattering three hits and one run throughout four innings. McClellan improves to 6-13 with the decision.

In game two, Brendel hit a two-run blast in the top of the first inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. USI sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth frame as it plated six runs to extend its lead to 8-0. Junior designated player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) led the inning off with a solo home run, while senior shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) had a two-run blast later in the frame.

Sophomore third baseman Dani Finkelstein (Windsor, Colorado) led the next inning off with a solo blast as the Eagles sent 16 batters to the dish en route to a 10-run fifth inning. USI had nine hits in the inning, including a trio of two-run singles by Ligmanowski, freshman catcher Alex Dunfee (Mishawaka, Indiana), and sophomore centerfielder Heather Swarts (Gas City, Indiana). Ligmanowski finished the contest with a team-high five runs batted in.

Junior pitcher Kambria Current (Indianapolis, Indiana) picked up the victory for the Eagles after giving up two unearned runs off five hits in four innings of work. Current, who struck out three batters, improves to 2-1 with the victory.

USI closes out the regular season this weekend when it hosts Saint Joseph's College Saturday at noon and the University of Indianapolis Sunday at noon. The Eagles will honor Ligmanowski, McKinley, and pitcher Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) as part of its Senior Day festivities following Sunday's games with the Greyhounds.
