KISSIMMEE, Fla.—Sophomore first baseman Brittany DeWeese (Evansville, Indiana) hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give senior pitcher Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) all the run support she needed as the University of Southern Indiana softball team defeated Concordia University-St. Paul, 4-0, Tuesday to salvage a split on its third day at the Division II Rebel Spring Games.

DeWeese, a Memorial High School graduate, added a two-run double in the third frame, while sophomore outfielder/pitcher Dawn McClellan (Valparaiso, Indiana) capped off the Screaming Eagles' three-run inning with an RBI-single.

Schneider (2-6) picked up her first complete-game shutout of the season after fanning eight batters and scattering six hits throughout seven innings.

Earlier in the day, the Eagles fell to Chadron State College, 3-2, in eight innings despite a strong effort from freshman pitcher Hadley Clark (Owensboro, Kentucky), who fell to 1-1 after allowing just three hits and striking out seven batters in eight innings of work.

USI (4-14), which suffered from its eighth one-run setback of the year, struggled from the plate as it mustered just three hits and stranded six runners on base. The Eagles, however, capitalized on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score and force an extra set.

Chadron State (7-12) took advantage of the international tie-breaker rule in the top half of the eighth inning to plate a pair of runs and take a 3-1 lead. The Eagles got an RBI-single from sophomore infielder Amanda Brendel (Salem, Illinois) in the bottom part of the eighth inning, but could not push across the tying run as they fell to 0-4 in extra inning contests.

The Eagles will have Wednesday off before returning to the diamond Thursday to take on the University of Minnesota-Duluth (10 a.m. CDT) and Northern State University (2 p.m.).
