Eagles top Northern State, fall to Minnesota-Duluth

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team defeated Northern State University, 3-2, after falling to the University of Minnesota-Duluth, 2-1, in eight innings in its fourth day of action at the Division II Rebel Spring Games.

Sophomore infielder Amanda Brendel (Salem, Illinois) went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while junior pitcher Kambria Current (Indianapolis, Indiana) scattered five hits throughout seven innings to lead the Screaming Eagles to their win over Minnesota-Duluth.

After the Wolves (3-9) took advantage of an error to plate the game's first run in the top of the second inning, Brendel hit an RBI-single in the last half of the third frame to put the Eagles back into 1-1 tie.

Senior rightfielder Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) hit a two-out bomb over the leftfield fence in the fourth inning to break the stalemate and give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.

After seeing the Wolves tie the score at 2-2 with a tally in the top of the sixth, USI got a leadoff double from Brendel and a one-out, run-scoring double from junior designated player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) to take a 3-2 edge heading into the final frame.

Current (1-0), who allowed just two runs, one earned, set Northern State down in order in the final inning to secure her first win of the year and give the Eagles a split on the day.

Earlier in the day, the Eagle (5-15) left nine runners on base as they lost their ninth one-run contest of the season. Sophomore catcher Tara McConnell (Henderson, Kentucky) hit a solo home run in the top half of the fifth inning, but the Bulldogs (5-5) took advantage of the international tie-breaker rule to end the contest with a tally in the eighth frame.

Senior hurler Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) pitched a gem as she scattered six hits throughout 7.2 innings. Schneider (2-7) gave up just two runs, one earned, and struck out six batters in the setback.

The Eagles return to action Friday when they take on Le Moyne University at 8 a.m. (CDT) and Dowling College at noon. USI concludes the Rebel Spring Games Saturday with Southwest Minnesota State University (2 p.m.) and Wayne State University (4 p.m.).
