Eagles host North Alabama Wednesday

Game Notes

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team returns to action Wednesday when it hosts the University of North Alabama at the Physical Activities Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

USI (9-2) has won eight straight games after defeating Bellarmine University, 89-63, and Northern Kentucky University, 85-76, to open GLVC play last week.

Junior guard Ellen Young led the Screaming Eagles with 27.0 points per game, including a career-high 30 against Northern Kentucky. Young, who earned GLVC Player of the Week honors for her efforts, shot 73.9 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from behind the arc as USI defeated its arch-rivals in the same season for the first time since 2001-02.

For the season, Young leads the Eagles and is eighth in the GLVC with 15.4 points per appearance. Junior guard Amie Newhart is second on the team and 18th in the conference with 12.9 points per contest.

Newhart, who is fourth in the conference in assist-to-turnover ration (1.80), averaged 12.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game last week.

North Alabama (4-6), which upset the University of Alabama 68-67 in an exhibition game earlier this season, is coming off a 77-59 victory over Georgia Southwestern State University and is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Lions had five players in double figures in their victory over Georgia Southwestern State, led by sophomore forward Lacy Lewis' 19 points and 15 rebounds. Lewis is second on the team with 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, while junior forward Niala Harris leads the team with 13.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per outing.

USI won the only meeting between the two teams, posting an 89-51 triumph over the Lions on December 22, 2004. That contest was moved up from its 7 p.m. start time in anticipation of the snow storm that dumped nearly two feet of snow on the Evansville tri-state area.

Wednesday night's game will be USI's last contest until December 30, when it resumes play against Ferris State University.
