EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team is looking to extend its four-game winning streak Saturday when it takes on the University of Saint Francis (Indiana) in the first round of Bellarmine University Thanksgiving Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. USI also plays Hillsdale College Sunday.
Both games begin at noon (CST) and will be aired on WPSR 90.7 FM and on the internet at www.820theedge.com.
The Screaming Eagles (5-2) are coming off an 86-78 victory over Lincoln Memorial University Tuesday night. Junior guard Ellen Young led the Eagles with a game-high tying 21 points, while sophomore guard Rinesha Soaper chipped in 18 points.
Young leads the Eagles with 12.9 points per game, while junior guard Amie Newhart, who scored 10 points Tuesday night, is second on the squad with 12.5 points per contest. Soaper rounds out the Eagles' double-figure scorers with 11.9 points per appearance.
Saturday's game marks the first-ever meeting between USI and Saint Francis. The Cougars are 3-1 following a tough 84-73 double-overtime setback at Taylor University Tuesday night.
Junior forward Chanell Ridley led the Cougars with 21 points, while junior guard Julie Seiss and sophomore guard Kayla Mullins had 12 and 11 points, respectively. Mullins is averaging 17.0 points per game in two appearances this season, while Ridley is averaging 14.5 points per contest in four appearances.
USI leads the all-time series with Hillsdale, 2-1, after falling to the Chargers, 70-55, a year ago. The Chargers, who take on Bellarmine Saturday at 2 p.m., are off to a tough 0-2 start after dropping a 63-58 decision at Southwest Minnesota State University last Saturday.
Junior guard Janay Miller, who had a team-best 19 points against Southwest Minnesota State, leads the Chargers with 21.0 points per contest this season. Senior guard Brooke Knight is contributing 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in Hillsdale's first two games.
Following Sunday's game with the Chargers, USI opens GLVC play against Bellarmine December 3 at the Physical Activities Center.
