EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team opens its home schedule Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Midwest Region foe Urbana University at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (2-2) is coming off a thrilling 69-68 victory over Wayne State University Sunday, a win that evened the Screaming Eagles' record after a pair of tough three-point deficits to close out the Disney Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic at the beginning of the month.
Junior guard Amie Newhart, who leads the Eagles with 14.5 points per contest, sunk four lead-changing free throws and had the game-winning steal in the final minute to lead USI to the win over Wayne State. She finished the game with 11 points, one of three Eagles to reach double figures.
Fellow classmate Ellen Young led the Eagles with 13 points, while junior guard Lauren Meneghetti finished with 11 points, three assists, and four steals. Young is currently averaging 10.0 points and 2.0 steals per appearance, while Meneghetti is averaging 7.5 points and a team-high 2.5 assists per game.
Senior forward Anaris Sickles is chipping in 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per outing after scoring nine points and pulling down five rebounds in USI's latest win. Senior forward/center Ashton Mertens is aiding the Eagles with 8.8 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per contest.
Urbana (0-1) opened its season with a 74-63 setback at Saginaw Valley State University on Sunday. Senior forward/center Gail Hartings led the Blue Knights with 18 points and nine rebounds, while junior forward Ashley Falknor had a team-high five assists.
Wednesday's game marks the first-ever meeting between USI and Urbana in women's basketball. The Eagles also host Marygrove College Sunday at 2 p.m. and Lincoln Memorial University November 24.
