EVANSVILLE, Ind.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 5-4 win over Quincy University and salvage a doubleheader split Friday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI finishes the afternoon with an 11-8 overall record and a 4-1 GLVC mark, while Quincy goes to 9-7 overall, 4-2 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles scored the winning run in the nightcap when USI junior third baseman
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) sent a two-out liner down the leftfield line, driving in junior second baseman
Kevin O'Hair (Scottsdale, Arizona). O'Hair had reached base with a one-out walk and advanced into scoring position on a single by junior leftfielder
Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado).
On the mound, junior right-hander
Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) earned his second victory of the year in relief. Larsen (2-1) pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief of sophomore right-hander
Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) and junior right-hander
Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana).
Nichols started the game for USI and got the tough-luck no-decision. He held the Hawks hit-less for the first five innings before being relieved by Geiger after giving up four hits and three runs in the sixth inning. All the damage was done with two-outs.
In the opening game, the Hawk scored seven times in the top of the 10th to win the, 12-5, and break the six-game Eagles' winning streak. The game featured two ties and five lead changes, including the final inning.
Offensively, USI was led by junior second baseman
Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore shortstop
Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) with three hits each.
The Eagles and the Hawks conclude the GLVC four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
