EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Junior third baseman/pitcher
Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) had a three-run double in game one and tossed a three-hit shutout in game two to lead the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a sweep of Saint Joseph's College Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field.
USI (27-22-1, 11-10-1 GLVC) won the first game, 4-3, before winning game two in dramatic fashion, 1-0.
Eickholt's three-run double in game one completed a two-out rally for the Screaming Eagles that gave them a 3-2 advantage.
Junior centerfielder
Kirsten Morgan (Oakland City, Indiana) started the rally with a single with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore rightfielder
Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) and junior leftfielder
Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) followed with singles to set the plate for Eickholt, who hit a shot that fell off the out-stretched glove of Saint Joseph's centerfielder Stephanie Madsen at the warning track.
Sophomore shortstop
Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) led the fourth inning off with a solo home run to give junior hurler
Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) a two-run cushion (4-2) heading into the top of the fifth inning.
After a rough first inning, Harrison (15-11) settled down to pick up her team-leading 15th win of the year. She allowed just one run off six hits in the final six innings of the game after giving up two runs off four hits in the first inning.
The Eagles completed the two-game sweep in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two when senior first baseman
Jennifer Mullikin (Greenwood, Indiana) hit a walk-off single to centerfield that scored McKinley.
USI had just four hits in the game, but had two big hits and a key sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning that proved to be the difference.
Eickholt (8-6) earned her first-career shutout after allowing just five base runners the entire contest. She recorded three strikeouts in what proved to be her best outing of the season.
USI, which clinched a spot in next weekend's GLVC Tournament with the victories, will look to move up in the conference standings when it finishes the regular season with a GLVC doubleheader against the University of Indianapolis Sunday at noon at the USI Softball Field.
The Eagles are currently in seventh place, but could move as high as fourth with two wins against the Greyhounds and some help from around the conference.
Sunday's games against the Greyhounds are Senior Day and USI Varsity Club Day for the Eagles. The Varsity Club will be serving hot dogs free of charge, while the Eagles will honor their four seniors—catcher
Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana), second baseman
Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana), Mullikin, and outfielder
Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky)—following the completion of the two games.
