Eagles drill Dowling, fall to Saint Cloud State

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team scored six times in the top of the sixth inning to defeat Dowling College, 12-4, in six innings Thursday at the Division II Rebel Spring Games. The Screaming Eagles, however, saw their seven-game winning streak come to a halt later as they fell to Saint Cloud State University, 1-0.

USI (9-7) recorded 15 hits and took advantage of six errors in the victory over Dowling, but struggled from the plate in the loss to Saint Cloud State as it was held to just four hits.

Sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the win over Dowling. Junior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) also was 2-of-3 with a double and four RBIs in the victory.

Junior hurler Amy Harrison (Graceville, Indiana) was credited with her fourth straight decision after giving up four runs, two earned, off seven hits in five innings of work.

Eickholt took the loss against Saint Cloud State in her first career start inside the pitching circle despite giving up just one unearned run off four hits in seven innings of action. She struck out four batters while issuing just one walk.

The Eagles return to action Friday when they take on the College of Saint Rose at 8 a.m. (CST) and Georgian Court University at 10 a.m.

Southern Indiana 12, Dowling (5-5) 4
USI capitalized on three errors in the first two innings to grab a 6-1 lead and cruise to a 12-4 victory in six innings over Dowling.

The Eagles pounded out eight hits and scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the contest out of reach.

Eickholt led the Eagles with four RBIs, while McKinley, sophomore rightfielder Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois), sophomore centerfielder/pitcher Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana), senior catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana), and senior second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) all recorded an RBI.

Lindenschmidt went 2-for-4 from the plate with a pair of doubles, while Wood was 2-of-5 with three runs scored.

Harrison (5-2) fanned three batters, while giving up just two walks to pick up her fourth straight win. She allowed four runs, two earned, off seven hits in five innings of work.

Saint Cloud State (10-7) 1, Southern Indiana 0
In her first career start, Eickholt allowed just one unearned run off four hits in a complete-game performance that saw her come up on the losing end of a 1-0 affair with Saint Cloud State. Eickholt (0-1), who had pitched just twice, previously, in her collegiate career, struck out four batters while issuing just one walk.

Saint Cloud State took advantage of an error in the fifth inning to plate the game's only run and then held the Eagles at bay in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the shutout.

The Eagles had runners at first and second with one out in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not capitalize as they lost for the first time in eight games.

Offensively, the Eagles got hits from Ligmanowski, Wood, freshman catcher Tara McConnell (Henderson, Kentucky), and senior first baseman Jennifer Mullikin (Greenwood, Indiana).
