Eagles split day one at Charger Chillout

DECATUR, Ala.—The No. 23-ranked University of Southern Indiana softball team defeated the University of West Georgia, 6-0, but lost to Great Lakes Regional foe Wayne State University, 8-0, in five innings Friday at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout.

USI (2-4) got a strong start out of junior hurler Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) and home runs from sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) and senior catcher/designated player Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) in the victory over West Georgia. The Screaming Eagles, however, were held to just one hit and two base runners in the loss to Wayne State.

The Eagles return to action to take on Delta State University and No. 12-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. They finish the weekend Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with Georgia College & State University and the University of West Alabama.

USI avenged an 8-1 loss in its season-opener by routing West Georgia, 6-0, Friday to start the Charger Chillout. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of a two-run single from senior second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) and a three-run blast by McKinley.

Anderson, who was 3-for-3 from the plate, added a solo shot in the fifth inning to provide Harrison with more than enough runs to secure her first victory in an Eagle uniform.

Harrison (1-1) gave up six hits and one walk while striking out three batters en route to USI's first shutout of the season.

Wayne State 8, USI 0 (5 innings)
The Eagles gave up three runs in the bottom of the third and five runs in the fifth as the Warriors of Wayne State pinned an 8-0 setback on USI.

USI struggled from the plate as Wayne State hurler Molly Yetman through 12 strikeouts, six of which ended up being called third strikes. Lindenschmidt had USI's lone hit, a double down the leftfield line in the second inning.

Junior hurler Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) took the loss after giving up three runs off six hits in two and a third's inning of work. Schneider falls to 1-1 on the season with the setback. Harrison came on in relief, but gave up five runs, four earned, in one and two-thirds innings of work.
