Eagles leave home for conference trip

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team gets its first taste of GLVC play on the road when it takes on Saint Joseph's College Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Rensselaer, Indiana, and the University of Indianapolis Saturday at noon (CST) in Indianapolis.

USI (4-1, 1-0 GLVC) has won four straight games after defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 73-66, last Saturday at the Physical Activities Center in its conference-opener. The win completed a four-game sweep of the Screaming Eagles homestand that saw them post an average margin of victory of 21.3 points per game.

Senior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) led the Eagles in their victory over KWC with 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Akiya Alexander (Evanston, Illinois) chipped in 12 points, while senior forward/center Sarah Buldtman (Metropolis, Illinois) added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

For the season, senior guard Katie Thiesenhusen (Muskego, Wisconsin) leads the Eagles with 15.0 points and 4.3 assists per game, while Buldtman is the team's leader in rebounds with 6.2 rebounds per contest. Junior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) is chipping in 11.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per outing, while senior guard/forward Michelle King (Columbus, Indiana) is averaging 11.0 points per game.

The Eagles defeated the Pumas of Saint Joseph's, 90-83, last year at the PAC. USI leads the all-time series, 26-23, and are 9-3 since 2000 against the Pumas.

SJC (0-5, 0-1 GLVC) enters Thursday's game in search of its first win after falling to the University of Missouri-Rolla, 78-66, in its conference opener. Junior guard Allison Hughes leads the Pumas with 15.4 points and 2.4 assists per game, while senior forward Michelle Bova is adding 13.0 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds per contest. Junior center Patience Meyer is chipping in 11.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per outing.

On Saturday, the Eagles will be looking for their first victory over the Greyhounds of Indianapolis since the 2003-04 season when the Eagles defeated them 86-68 at the PAC. Since then, UIndy has won the last three games in the series. The Greyhounds lead the all-time series, 29-23, with USI and are 8-4 against the Eagles since 2000.

UIndy (3-1, 1-0 GLVC), which hosts Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday, has won its last two games, including a 59-47 triumph in its GLVC opener against Missouri-Rolla. Senior guard Mandy Geryak leads the Greyhounds with 16.3 points and 4.0 assists per game, while junior forward Deanna Thomson is chipping in 11.0 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds per outing. Senior forward Amanda Norris is adding 14.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest.
