Eagles looking for first win in home-opener

Host Illinois-Springfield Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team is looking for its first victory of the season when it hosts the University of Illinois-Springfield in its regular-season home-opener Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (0-1) is coming off a 58-47 setback at the University of Central Missouri last Wednesday. The Screaming Eagles led 43-42 with 5:37 to play in the contest, but a scoreless drought that lasted nearly five minutes allowed the Jennies to reel off a 10-0 run and end USI's chances for a victory in its season-opener.

Junior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) and senior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) added nine and eight points, respectively. Brandon also had eight rebounds, while Jolly had three assists and four steals.

USI, which is 3-0 all-time against the Prairie Stars of Illinois-Springfield, will likely be without the services of senior guard Katie Thiesenhusen (Muskego, Wisconsin) and junior guard Missy Glaser (Evansville, Indiana). Both Thiesenhusen and Glaser are nursing knee injuries.

The last time the two teams met was December 29, 2003, when the Eagles defeated the Prairie Stars 83-51 at the PAC.

Illinois-Springfield (2-3) enters Tuesday's game on a three-game losing streak that includes a 33-point setback to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a 42-point loss to Eastern Illinois University.

Junior forward/center Bethany Borrenpohl leads the Prairie Stars with 12.2 points per game, while senior forward/center Shelby Horgan leads Illinois-Springfield with 6.4 rebounds per contest.

Following the Eagles contest with Illinois-Springfield, the Eagles will host the Gulf South Conference's Christian Brothers University Sunday at 2 p.m.
