EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team returns to action Sunday when the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Wayne State University visits the Physical Activities Center for a 2 p.m. tip off.
Despite a 71-57 setback to Lewis University last weekend, the Screaming Eagles (6-5) have won six of their last eight games since starting the season with three losses at the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic.
USI has allowed just 55.0 points per game and has held the opposition to a 37.2 field goal percentage in the last eight games.
Sophomore forward
Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) and freshman point guard
Keisha Collins (South Holland, Illinois) have led the Eagles during their resurgence. Baines is averaging 15.0 points and 5.9 rebounds during USI's last eight games, while Collins is chipping in 11.5 points and 4.1 assists during the same stretch.
For the season, Baines is averaging a team-high 13.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, while Collins is averaging 10.4 points and a team-best 3.6 assists per contest.
Wayne State (3-5) has lost two straight games and three of its last four. Junior guard Cherita Smith leads the Warriors with 12.3 points per game, while sophomore guard/forward Nicole Rogers is averaging a team-high 6.3 rebounds per contest.
USI, which is 20-3 against non-conference opposition in the month of December under Head Coach
Rick Stein, leads the all-time series with Wayne State, 2-0, after defeating the Warriors, 89-74, during the 2003-04 season.
On Tuesday, the Eagles will host Purdue University-Calumet. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at the PAC.
USI leads the all-time series with Purdue-Calumet, 1-0, after defeating the Peregrines 115-37 at the start of the 2000-01 season. The Peregrines (6-5), who are coming off a 70-48 loss at Davenport University, play Bethel College (Tennessee) and Silver Lake College Friday and Saturday, respectively, at the Trinity Christian College Classic.
Sophomore guard Michelle Jones led the Peregrines with 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game heading into their contest with Davenport Wednesday night.
