EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team posted its third straight shutout with a 9-0 victory over Quincy University Saturday morning at the USI Tennis Courts. USI raises its record to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the GLVC, while Quincy falls to 7-5 overall, 2-3 GLVC.
With the victory, the Screaming Eagles locked up the number three seed in the West Division of the GLVC. USI will play Lewis University, the number two seed from the East Division, in the first round of the conference tournament on October 7-8. The tournament will be played at the Moreland Park Tennis Facility in Owensboro, Kentucky.
The Eagles got off to a great start against Quincy by sweeping all three of the doubles matches, led by sophomore
Reilly Ackerman (Allendale, Illinois) and junior
Kimberly Decker (Brownsburg, Indiana) at number two doubles. Ackerman and Decker defeated Quincy's Julia Rodriguez and Sarah Harris, 8-0.
In singles, Ackerman set the tone at number one with a straight victory and did not lose a point. Sophomore
Maggie Coffman (Sellersburg, Indiana) followed Ackerman's lead at number six singles, winning in straight sets and losing just one point.
Senior
Ashley Rees (Vincennes, Indiana) continued her attack on the USI record book with a pair of victories on Saturday. Rees combined with junior
Audra Bartelt (Jasper, Indiana) to win an 8-4 decision over Quincy's Kerry Romani and Jackie Ostermiller at number one doubles and posted a straight set victory at number two singles.
Rees needs two doubles victories and nine singles victories to tie USI record-holder Emily Blinzinger. Blinzinger, a four-time All-GLVC performer, had 57 singles and 48 doubles wins as a Screaming Eagle.
Senior
Cassy Froderman (Brazil, Indiana) rounded out the USI victory by winning in straight sets at number five singles. Earlier in the match, she had partnered with Coffman to win at number three doubles, 8-5.
