Eagles extend win streak to eight

Sweep Indianapolis in GLVC doubleheader

The University of Southern Indiana softball team extended its season-high win streak to eight games with a sweep of the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles won the first game, 10-0 in five innings, and the second game, 5-2, to improve to 20-16 overall and 11-7 in the GLVC.

Junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) went 3-for-3 with a homerun and four RBIs in the first game. Her fourth homerun of the year, a three-run blast over the left-centerfield fence in the bottom of the first inning, gave the Eagles all the offense it would need.

Boonville native Shannon Emmons (11-12) picked up the win after holding the Greyhounds, who fall to 21-16 overall and 9-7 in the GLVC, to just two hits and no runs. Emmons, a junior, helped her self from the plate by going 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs, and a run scored.

In game two, Emmons came on in the top of the fifth inning to pick up her first save of the season. However, she also had her team-leading 12-game hit streak come to a close in the second game.

Sophomore rightfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) went 3-for-4 in the second game with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Oelling, who raised her batting average to .407 on the season with her 5-for-7 day, also had a triple and a pair of runs scored in the first game.

Junior third baseman Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI to help the Eagles offense in the second game. Senior centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana), who was 3-of-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and junior second baseman Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Indiana) each drove in a run in the second game.

Freshman hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the victory in the second game. Grover (8-4) gave up two runs off four hits in four innings of work.

The Eagles, who honored their five seniors in between games Saturday, will return to action this Tuesday, April 22, when they travel to Lebanon, Illinois, to take on McKendree College. The doubleheader is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.

USI will wrap up its conference schedule next Sunday, April 27, at Quincy University (noon) and its regular season schedule next Monday, April 29, as it plays host to Brescia University in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
