USI women’s basketball to host regional foe Michigan Tech Monday

The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team will host Michigan Tech University in an important Great Lakes Regional game Monday, November 19, at 7 p.m. in the Physical Activities Center.

The Screaming Eagles are coming off their second-place finish in the Division II Tip-Off Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports. The Eagles were 2-1, defeating the University of Nebraska-Omaha, 80-77, and the University of Minnesota-Duluth, 89-70, while falling to South Dakota State University in the championship game, 106-104 in overtime.

USI was led the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, sophomore forward Jessica Stuckman (Quincy, Illinois), and All-Tournament performer, senior guard Jasmine Moore (Chicago, Illinois). Stuckman, who had 36 points in the championship game, has averaged 22.7 ppg and 6.0 rpg in the first three contests. Moore averaged 17.0 ppg, including a USI career-best 26 points against UNO.

Junior forward Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) also had an impressive debut with the Eagles. The transfer from Tallahassee Community College averaged 16.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg at Disney.

MTU will be playing its first game of the season on Monday and has enjoyed success against the Eagles, winning the last two of the last three meetings. The Huskies defeated USI in Houghton, Michigan, 84-73 in 1996-97 and at the PAC in the 1998 NCAA II Great Lakes Regional, 94-92 in double overtime. The Eagles, who defeated MTU 84-68 to open the 1997-98 season, lead the series, 3-2.

The Huskies were 26-4 overall a year ago, finishing first in the North Division of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and hosted the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional. MTU's season ended last March when they fell to Northern Michigan University, 76-63.
