Screaming Eagles fall to IU Indy in home opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer fell narrowly in its home opener to Indiana University Indianapolis 1-0 on Wednesday night despite outshooting the Jaguars fourteen to nine.
 
The Screaming Eagles (0-1-2) came up just shy against the Jaguars (3-1-0) in a hard-fought matchup where USI was unable to find a breakthrough on 14 shots and 12 corner kicks.
 
Senior midfielder Garrett Morris led the team with three shots and two on goal, followed by sophomore midfielder Edin Cvorovic and freshman defender Bryce Siegel with two shots each. Cvorovic had two on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob English led the team from a defensive front, surrendering one goal on a penalty kick and gathering seven saves.
 
To open the match, the Screaming Eagles were on IU Indy's side for most of the first 20 minutes of the match, taking two shots and earning two corner kicks. Morris had a shot toward the bottom left corner of the goal that was saved.
 
USI continued their aggressive offensive approach going into the hydration break, highlighted by Cvorovic just missing on a rebound shot, as IU Indy's goalkeeper made a leaping save to send it over the crossbar.
 
IU Indy capitalized on a USI foul in the box, shooting a penalty kick into the back of the net to put the Jaguars up 1-0 in the 29th minute.
 
USI battled for the final 16 minutes of the first half, stringing together multiple corner kicks but were unable to find the equalizer before halftime.
 
The Screaming Eagles opened the second half on the defensive front. English earned two quick saves to prevent a second goal.
 
As the action got heated and the physicality ramped up, the Screaming Eagles resumed their aggressive offensive approach. However, USI was unable to take advantage of three corner kicks.
 
English continued his strong defensive showing, adding two more saves leading into the 70th minute of play.  
 
From then on, the Screaming Eagles outshot the Jaguars four to one, including one on goal, and generated three corner opportunities. However, USI could not find the leveling goal before the final whistle.
 
The Screaming Eagles (0-1-2) will continue their two-game homestand against the Bellarmine University Knights (2-0-1) on Tuesday, September 8, at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on usiscreamingeagles.com.
