USI hosts four-game homestand this week

Screaming Eagles vs. YSU in Holiday Inn Showcase

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — University of Southern Indiana Baseball begins a four-game homestand this week when it plays Illinois State at the USI Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
 
The homestand continues Friday with the start of the Holiday Inn Showcase, featuring USI and Youngstown State in a three-game slate. The Holiday Inn Showcase starts Friday at 4 p.m., continues Saturday at 4 p.m., and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

USI Baseball Notes:
USI splits road swing last. The USI Screaming Eagles (8-4) split their four-game road swing last week, falling to Saint Louis (3-1) and taking two of three from North Alabama (20-1, 8-0, 3-7).

Slack, McLellan led USI at the plate last week. Senior shortstop Clayton Slack led USI in four games last week, hitting .571 (8-14) with a team-high six RBIs and two doubles. Senior first baseman Patrick McLellan batted .500 (8-16) with three RBIs.

Slack leads USI and the OVC. Senior shortstop Clayton Slack leads USI and the OVC with a .489 batting average. He also ranks 19th in batting average and second in hits (23) in the NCAA.

Holiday is the run maker. USI graduate centerfielder Khi Holiday has been generating the offense for the Screaming Eagles this season. Holiday leads USI, the OVC, and ranks third in the NCAA with 20 runs scored this season.   

Doing it at the plate. USI is putting runs on the scoreboard at an incredible rate. USI leads the OVC and ranks 16th in the NCAA with 9.9 runs per game this season (119). The Screaming Eagles also rank first in the OVC and 18th in the NCAA with a .329 team batting average.

Improved pitching last week. USI showed some improvement on the mound last week, posting a 2.81 ERA in 32 innings over four games, compared to a 5.31 overall this season through 12 games. Junior right-hander Ryan Weller had the best start of the week, going five innings and blanking North Alabama on two hits while striking out six. Junior right-hander Abdriel Figueroa also had a strong start, allowing one run through five innings at UNA.

This season on the mound. Junior right-handers Trey O'Neil and Abdriel Figueroa lead USI in the win column with two each. O'Neil has a 0.00 ERA in five appearances and 6.1 innings of work out of the pen.

ISU in 2026. Illinois State is 7-4 in 2026 after salvaging the final game of a three-game series at Middle Tennessee State, 14-7, this afternoon.

USI vs. ISU. USI leads the all-time series with ISU, 1-0, posting a 6-5 victory at the USI Baseball Field in 1977. 

YSU in 2026. YSU is off to a tough start in 2026, winning once in the 11 tries this spring. The Penguins (1-10) picked up their first win of the season over the weekend, taking game one of the series at Longwood.

USI vs. YSU. The series will be the first meetings between USI and Youngstown State in baseball.
