IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Southern Indiana Women's Swimming and Diving team competed at the Summit League Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, finishing sixth out of seven teams with 252.5 points.
The University of Denver won its 13th straight championship, scoring 971 points, nearly 200 ahead of second-place South Dakota with 799. Nebraska Omaha placed third with 533. South Dakota State earned fourth with 458, 48 ahead of fifth-place St. Thomas. USI took sixth, while Eastern Illinois was seventh with 169.
Day One
The Screaming Eagles opened the event with two relay teams earning spots in the A finals. First in the 200 medley relay, the team of freshman
Hannah Pryor, junior
Hayden Shurtz, and sophomores
Elizabeth Ketcham and
Emma Gabhart earned sixth overall after recording 1:45.10. Then in the 800 freestyle relay, the team of junior
Caiya Cooper, freshman
Addie Holmes, freshman
Audrey Kalvaitis, and senior
Mattilynn Smith, earned a 7:45.63 time placing them sixth in the A finals.
On the boards, women's diving competed in the team diving event, finishing in a team day 1 high fourth place. Junior
Maranda Uttke, sophomore
Anna Bunnell, and sophomore
Gabbie Meier combined for a 234.60 score.
The team finished day one of the competition, earning 52 points and a sixth-place slot. The Eagles were six points behind South Dakota for fifth place, and up four on last-place Eastern Illinois.
Day Two
USI impressed on day two of the event, recording one A finalist and three B finals spots. Gabhart broke the university record in the 200 individual medley during the preliminary round, recording a time of 2:04.79 and earning a slot in the B finals. The sophomore finished second in the B finals, breaking the record she set earlier in the day with a 2:04.62 time.
The record-shattering continued into the 200 freestyle relay, with the team of Gabhart, Pryor, Ketcham, and sophomore
Simone Green, recording a time of 1:35.99 in the A finals, earning a sixth-place slot .
Bunnell dazzled once again on day two, earning a bronze medal in the one-meter diving A finals following an impressive 253.45 performance. The sophomore contributed 16 points to the team score with her one-meter dive.
After day two, the Eagles sat in sixth with a combined team score of 139 for the event. USI trailed South Dakota State by 11 for fifth place and was ahead of Eastern Illinois by 36.
Day Three
The Eagles continued to fight into day three, earning four B-final spots. Gabhart broke her third program record of the weekend in the 400 individual medley B finals, recording an astounding 4:29.96 time, earning the top spot in the B finals.
Shurtz carried her performance from previous days over, finishing sixth in the B finals, clocking a 1:05.82 time. Ketcham swam an impressive 57.95 100 butterfly, while Smith finished seventh in the B finals after a 1:54.81 performance.
USI finished the third day of competition in sixth place with a 180.5 team score, over 60 points ahead of seventh-place Eastern Illinois.
Day Four
USI finished the competition strong, earning spots in six finals. Starting with the three-meter diving, Bunnell led the team with a fifth-place finish in the A Finals, scoring an impressive 257.50. Meier also earned a spot in the A finals, finishing seventh overall after posting a 250.25 score.
The day continued with Gabhart earning an A finals spot in the 200 breaststroke, finishing seventh with a 2:21.14, and earning 12 points for the team. Junior
Naomi Weaver nabbed a B finals placement in the 200 butterfly, clocking a 2:12.93. Rounding out the individual results, Smith swam to a 17:42.51 finish, grabbing six points.
Finishing the competition, the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Smith, Kalvaitis, Cooper, and Gabhart earned a massive 26 points, after finishing sixth with a stellar 3:33.27 time.
What's Next
The Eagles finish the 2025-26 campaign with a 2-7 record, picking up two victories against crosstown opponent the University of Evansville. USI finished sixth in the Indiana Intercollegiate hosted by Purdue in November and 10th in the House of Champions hosted by Indiana University Indianapolis. With a strong class of returning athletes for 2026-27, the program will enter its fifth year with plenty to be confident about.
