EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer welcomes Miami University (Ohio) to Strassweg Field Sunday when the Screaming Eagles and Redhawks clash at 1 p.m.
Southern Indiana (0-5-1) aims to make its way into the win column for the first time this season and end a four-match skid. USI is 0-1-1 at home so far, earning a 2-2 draw against Robert Morris University on August 22 and getting narrowed out 2-1 last Sunday against Wright State University.
The Screaming Eagles return home after getting edged 1-0 in its road contest at Purdue University Fort Wayne on Thursday. The match was scoreless for over 70 minutes until the host Mastodons scored the game's only tally in the 72
nd minute.
Despite recording the game's first five shots and holding Purdue Fort Wayne without a shot for the first 15 minutes, USI was outshot 23-9. Sophomore midfielder
Greta Ohlwein (Highland Park, Illinois) led USI with three shots, and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama) had a season-high seven saves.
On the season, redshirt freshman
Eva Boer (St. Charles, Illinois) tops the squad with two of the team's four goals. Junior forward
Payton Seymour (Louisville, Kentucky) and junior midfielder
Emerson Grafton (Camas, Washington) claim the Eagles' other two goals. USI is averaging over 10 shots per match with 46 percent of its shots on goal.
Miami (Ohio) is the second Mid-American Conference team USI will have faced this season. USI fell in its road match at Northern Illinois University on August 29. The Redhawks are 2-1-2 this season with results in their last two contests.
In its last outing, Miami battled then-ranked University of South Carolina to a scoreless draw last Sunday. The Gamecocks were ranked No. 21 at the time of the match. Chances were limited in the matchup, as each side had their best looks off crosses and corner kicks. The two sides combined for 23 shots and only six total shots on goal.
Graduate senior forward Taylor Hamlett has led Miami's charge this season, pacing the team with five goals, 12 points and 17 shots with eight on target. Hamlett began the season with two-goal games in the first two matches for the Redhawks. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Dominique Popa is the reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out South Carolina last weekend. Popa has made three starts with a 1.00 goals against average and 15 saves.
Sunday's match is only the second all-time meeting between Southern Indiana and Miami. In last year's first meeting in Oxford, Ohio, USI fell 1-0 to the Redhawks. A Miami goal a couple of minutes before halftime was the difference on the scoreboard.
