USI finishes road trip at WIU

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men's Basketball concludes the four-game road swing Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with a trip to Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois.

USI (8-20, 5-10 OVC) is 1-2 during the road trip, after defeating Morehead State University, 80-73, on Tuesday. Junior guard Jeremiah Hernandez (Chicago, Illinois) and sophomore guard/forward AJ Smith (Edwardsville, Illinois) are leading the Eagles with 20.7 points and 20.0 points per contest, respectively, during the road swing. Smith also is posting a team-best 9.0 rebounds per outing, while sophomore forward Kiyron Powell (Evansville, Indiana) is grabbing 6.7 boards per contest. USI, as a team, is taking better care of the basketball on the trip, only averaging 8.6 turnovers a contest.
 
For the season, Hernandez leads USI with 17.0 points per game this season, 20.9 points per contest in the OVC. Smith follows Hernandez with 13.7 points and a team-best 9.1 rebounds per outing, while posting a team-high 11 double-doubles.
 
USI, which is 3-4 in February, has three games remaining in the 2023-24 regular season, two in February and one in March. The Eagles are eighth in the OVC, entering Saturday's game, and needs a pair of wins and/or losses by Tennessee Tech University and Southeast Missouri State University to secure a spot in the league's post-season tournament at the Ford Center March 6-9.
 
The Leathernecks of WIU (17-10, 10-4 in the OVC) dropped to fourth in the OVC, a game out of a three-way tie for second, after falling to Morehead State University, 78-57, at home Thursday. WIU is 5-5 in its last 10 after starting the year 12-6.
 
WIU took the first meeting of the season with USI, 73-68, at Screaming Eagles Arena. USI had three players in double-digits, led by the 26 points from Hernandez. The Leathernecks lead the series with USI, 4-1.
 
Following the conclusion of the four-game road swing, the Eagles finish the 2023-24 regular season by hosting Lindenwood University February 29 and Southeast Missouri State University March 2 at Screaming Eagles Arena.
