USI swept by Morehead State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball was swept in a doubleheader by Morehead State University, 11-4 and 5-1, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI watched its record go to 7-17, while Morehead State goes to 13-10.
 
Game 1:
USI allowed eight runs between the third and sixth innings before losing, 11-4, in the opening game of the doubleheader Sunday. The Morehead Eagles would get two in the third and fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, one in the eighth, and two in the ninth for the victory.
 
The Screaming Eagles scored their runs with one in the fifth, three in the sixth, and one in the seventh. USI junior righfielder/leftfielder Ren Tachioka (Japan) and sophomore shortstop Ricardo Van Grieken (Venezuela) led the Eagle hitters with three hits, while junior first baseman Jack Ellis (Jeffersonville, Indiana) had a pair of hits.
 
Van Grieken, Tachioka, and junior rightfielder Drew Taylor (Jeffersonville, Indiana) tied for the team-lead with one RBI each.
 
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Gavin Seebold (Jeffersonville, Indiana) started and got the loss for the USI Eagles. Seebold (1-3) allowed four runs, two earned, on two hits and five walks, while striking out one in three innings of work.
 
Game 2:
USI stumbled in the extra-inning nightcap, 5-1, allowing four tallies in the extra inning eighth.
 
The pitching-duel in game two had USI trailing, 1-0, going into the bottom of the seventh. USI tied the game 1-1 when senior catcher Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior pinch hitter Gavin McLarty (Buckner, Kentucky) before the Eagles stranded the lead run at third base to close out the frame.
 
Morehead bounced back with the four-run eighth to take the lead for good in the 5-1 decision.
 
On the mound, sophomore left-hander Mason Sweeney (Fishers, Indiana) took the loss in relief. Sweeney (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out two in one inning.
 
USI sophomore right-hander Gavin Morris (Brazil, Indiana) started and gave the Eagles a strong six innings before getting a no decision. Morris gave up one run on two hits and three walks in addition to striking out a career-high six batters in a career-best six innings pitched.
 
 
Up Next for the Eagles:  
The Eagles return to the road Tuesday when they visit Ball State University for the first time in program history. First pitch Tuesday is set for 2 p.m. (CDT) in Muncie, Indiana.
 
The Ball State Cardinals are 17-6 overall in 2023 after completing a three-game sweep of Eastern Michigan University with a 7-3 win on the road this afternoon. Ball State has won eight-straight games and 11 of its last 12 contests.
