EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer begins a three-match road swing with a stop in the Windy City against Chicago State University Friday at 7 p.m. and at Purdue University Fort Wayne Sunday at 12 p.m. The Screaming Eagles will carry with them a four-match unbeaten streak into the weekend.
The Screaming Eagles' (2-1-2) previous match at home on Monday against Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis was abandoned at halftime due to inclement weather, where the score was 0-0 and only three combined shots were taken. The match will not be rescheduled.
Previously, USI had a 0-0 tie on the road last Thursday at North Alabama. The result was USI's second straight draw. The road match with the Lions was a physical battle for USI, as there were a combined 30 fouls called. Plus, the battle for possession and battle in the midfield went back and forth. The Screaming Eagles came within inches of scoring a late go-ahead goal with four minutes remaining, as junior midfielder
Alexis Schone (Galena, Ohio) blasted a free kick from about 35 yards out that struck the crossbar.
Senior goalkeeper
Maya Etienne (Midland, Michigan) achieved a career milestone in the 0-0 draw at North Alabama, as she surpassed 250 career saves with a six-save night in goal. Her 252 career saves put her fifth all-time in USI history. Etienne already holds USI's all-time shutout record with 32 career clean sheets.
Freshman midfielder
Peyton Murphy (Bargersville, Indiana) had the lone shot on goal against the Lions for the Screaming Eagles. She leads the team with four goals, nine points, and 10 shots with nine on goal.
Through five matches in 2022, USI is at the top among Ohio Valley Conference teams with 69 shots, averaging 13.8 per game. After five matches, USI is outshooting their opponents 69 to 38 and 38 to 18 in shots on goal. 14 Eagles have already recorded multiple shot attempts and eight players have multiple shots on goal this season, led by Murphy with 10 shots and nine on target. USI leads the OVC in goals (6), assists (7), and points (19).
Senior forward/midfielder
Jill DiTusa (St. Charles, Illinois) and junior forward/midfielder
Morgan Beyer (Rossford, Ohio) are climbing up the USI record lists. Both players have been key in USI's attack throughout their careers. DiTusa and Beyer each have 32 career points, only two away from entering the top-15 all-time in USI history. Doing most of their damage with goal-scoring, both are also approaching the top-12 for career goals in the USI record books. DiTusa is one goal away from entering the top-12, while Beyer needs three to enter USI's top-12 all-time for goals scored.
Chicago State is 1-5-0 so far in the 2022 season, earning their lone win in a 2-1 final at the Valparaiso Beacons, who were predicted to finish first in the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll. The Cougars started their season away from home for their first five matches and will finish their season with eight road matches, having only four matches at home. Last time out, CSU fell 2-0 to Idaho on Sunday. This season, all four of the Cougars' goals have come from four players. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Delaney Kenney has led the offense with a pair of assists and five shots on goal out of 10 attempts to go along with her one goal scored. In net, sophomore Alexa Seiler has seen most of the action between the posts. In five matches played, Seiler has made 26 saves for a .703 save percentage and 2.20 goals against average. In 2021, CSU was 2-14-1 and 2-8 in conference play. Chicago State recently departed the WAC in June 2022.
Purdue Fort Wayne has a 2-2-2 record this season, defeating Chicago State 4-1 in their regular season opener and Ball State 1-0 on September 1. The Mastodons are coming off a 2-1 loss at Southern Illinois University, as the Salukis snapped a three-match unbeaten streak for Purdue Fort Wayne. The Mastodons will kick off their weekend with a road matchup at Valparaiso before hosting USI Sunday. Senior forward Mackenzie Evans leads Purdue Fort Wayne with four goals, nine points, and seven shots on goal. Redshirt senior forward Kelsey Gallagher has two goals and leads the team with ten shots.
