USI takes on a trio in the Chattanooga Classic

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Volleyball (0-6, 0-0 OVC) takes a trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the Chattanooga Classic. The Screaming Eagles will battle Miami (OH) University (2-4) Friday at noon before dueling against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1-5) Friday at 6 p.m. USI rounds out the classic by facing Duquesne University (1-5) Saturday at 1 p.m. All game times are central.

Screaming Eagles Headlines:
Ohio Woes. University of Southern Indiana went 0-3 in the Kent State Invitational in Kent, Ohio last weekend. The Screaming Eagles fought hard against Oakland University, Kent State University, and Cornell University despite going a combined 1-9 in 10 sets.

Bednar Honored. It was announced that sophomore Abby Bednar landed herself on the Kent State Invitational All-Tournament team. Bednar finished the weekend with 22 kills, 26 digs, and three aces after playing in 10 sets.

Double Trouble. In USI's 3-1 loss to Cornell, sophomore Abby Weber and junior Katherine Koch each earned double-doubles for the second time this season. This is the second time USI had two or more players notch double-doubles in the same match (L. Anderson-21 kills, 14 digs; Koch-44 assists, 15 digs; Weber-14 kills, 10 digs vs. Murray State). Weber finished the match with 16 kills and 10 digs while Koch nabbed 41 assists and 11 digs.

Season Leaders. Weber leads the Eagles with 62 kills and 69 points while junior Leah Anderson has 60 kills and 68.5 points. Koch has dominated the passing game, leading the team with 160 assists. Bednar has earned a team-high four aces while freshman Keira Moore has secured 81 digs.

OVC Leaders. USI has three players noted in the conference individual standings. Koch has the second most assists with 160 while being fourth in assists per set with 7.27. Sophomore Lauren O'Neill has put up 1.08 blocks per set, putting her fourth in the OVC. Moore ranks fourth in the conference with 3.68 digs per set and holds fifth most digs with 81.

Guarding the Front Lines. Freshman Bianca Anderson and O'Neill have stood tall at the net for USI, earning 15 and 14 blocks, respectively. The Eagles have five players with double-digit blocks (B. Anderson-15; O'Neill-14; Koch-13; L. Anderson-11; Downing-10) while the team has 40 total blocks (one solo and 78 assists).
 
Anderson's Amazing Career. L. Anderson is the lone Eagle who ranks first in career kills per set, service aces per set, and points per set within the OVC. Anderson holds a 2.99 kills per set rating along with a 0.45 ace per set mark. She also sits atop the league with career points per set with 3.67.
 
About Miami (OH). The RedHawks have started the season 2-4, receiving wins against Bradley and Marshall. Offensively, Miami has 264 kills, 251 assists, and 34 aces. On the defensive side, the RedHawks have recorded 307 digs and 23 blocks (eight solo and 30 assists).
 
Leading the RedHawks. Freshman Ellie Hanson has kicked off her collegiate campaign successfully, leading the RedHawks with 63 kills and 68 digs. Senior Allyson Severance is closing the attack gap with 62 kills and a team-high 2.95 kills per set. Freshman Hayden Hicks leads the team with 161 assists while freshman Gentry Warrick has a total 12 blocks.
 
About UT Chattanooga. The Mocs are coming off a 1-5 start to its season, earning a win against Presbyterian last weekend. As a team, Chattanooga has 248 kills, 219 assists, and 34 aces. Defensively, the Mocs have tallied 362 digs and 37 blocks (13 solo and 48 assists). Chattanooga will face UNC Asheville (9/7) and Duquesne (9/9) before facing the Eagles.
 
Leading the Mocs. Redshirt-senior Natalie Tyson has stormed away with 64 kills for Chattanooga while sophomore Sophia Bossong has collected 105 assists. Sophomore Paige Gallentine leads the team with 97 digs and six aces while sophomore Kate Neill has recorded a team-leading nine blocks.
 
About Duquesne. The Dukes look to turn around its 1-5 start after defeating Canisius last weekend. As a team, Duquesne has earned 218 kills, 205 assists, and 35 aces. After six matches, the Dukes have acquired 309 digs and 48 blocks (16 solo and 64 assists) while ranking 93rd nationally in blocks per set with 2.29. Duquesne also is 94th nationally in attacks per set with 35.05, second most in the Atlantic 10 Conference just behind George Washington (35.64). The Dukes will face Saint Francis (9/6), Chattanooga (9/9), and Miami (9/9) before battling the Eagles.
 
Leading the Dukes. Freshman Carsyn Henschen has developed for the Dukes, leading the team with 64 kills and seven aces. Senior Hailey Poling has earned a team-high 167 assists and 57 digs while freshman Madison Grimm has collected a team-leading 58 digs. At the net, freshman Ariel Helm has dominated the blocking game for Duquesne with 21 blocks.
 
Welcome to Division I. USI Board of Trustees voted unanimously in January 2022 to transition to NCAA Division I athletics beginning in the fall of 2022. The Eagles will be a full-time member of the Ohio Valley Conference and will face Division I opponents during the regular season for the first time in program history. The Eagles spent 42 seasons in NCAA Division II.
 
History in the Making. Anderson is within striking distance of becoming the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill plateau and 13th player to reach the 1,000-dig plateau. If successful in both endeavors, Anderson would become the fifth player in program history to reach both milestones.
 
Record Book Watch. The Eagles have one player climbing up the USI Volleyball Record Book:
Leah Anderson is seventh in service aces (142) and 16th in kills (944) all-time.
